The Fort Sumner neighborhood, which consists of 111 houses off Sangamore Road, takes its name from the Civil War fort of the same name. The fort was razed in 1956 to make way for homes to be built, according to a history of the neighborhood compiled by the Fort Sumner Citizens Association.

Fifteen different builders constructed homes in Fort Sumner. Fort Sumner is a very desirable neighborhood ideally located with easy access to downtown Bethesda, DC, Georgetown and to Virginia. This location offers conveniences of shopping at the nearby Shops of Sumner Place, Westbard Center and is close to the canal and the Capitol Crescent Trail.  This community prides itself on its annual Halloween parade, Block Party, Luminaria and other neighborhood events organized by an active volunteer association. Residents enjoy tennis courts, a popular sledding hill, playing fields and parks within close- proximity to this home. The current public schools are Wood Acres Elementary School, Thomas Pyle Middle School, and Walt Whitman High School. Many independent schools are also in close proximity.
